Bentley Town Council Approves Arena Upgrades, Reviews Tourism Strategy

Bentley, AB – The Bentley Town Council held its regular meeting on June 10, 2025, at the Bentley Municipal Office, addressing a range of topics impacting the community.

Arena Upgrades Approved:

A significant decision made during the meeting was the authorization for CAO Marc Fortais to submit a grant application to the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre for lighting and low-E ceiling upgrades at the Bentley Arena. If the application is successful and secures 50% funding, the council authorized the CAO to enter into contracts with Reward Construction for the ceiling and Outlaw Electric for the lighting upgrades. Funding for the remaining costs will come from general reserves should no year-end surpluses be available.

Southeast Area Structure Plan (ASP):

Albert Flootman of PCPS provided a presentation regarding the Bentley Southeast ASP. Council gave feedback on the plan including minimizing impacts from toxic pollutants and harsh smells, ensuring mitigation from noise for residents, and creating architectural standards that are more appealing than other industrial areas. Deputy Mayor Hansen moved that the presentation be accepted as information, and that administration be directed to conduct a public engagement open house in the fall. The motion carried. Public consultation is planned for the first half of September, aiming to gather community input on the future development of the area.

Tourism Update:

Austin Weaver, Executive Director of Lacombe Regional Tourism, presented an update on regional tourism initiatives, including events planned for Bentley. Councillor Valiquette moved that council receive the presentation as information. The motion carried, indicating Council's receptiveness to the Lacombe Regional Tourism plan.

Landscaping Standards in Sunset Heights:

Councillor Eastman initiated a discussion regarding landscaping standards in the Sunset Heights Subdivision, specifically the addition of trees in new builds. "Council wanted more information to be able to discuss thoroughly," the minutes state. Deputy Mayor Hansen moved that the CAO research landscaping standards in other communities and bring back a report to Mayor and Council. The motion carried.

Other Business:

The council also reviewed financial reports, correspondence from Lacombe County Council and Parkland Regional Library System, and individual council reports. These were all accepted as information.

The meeting adjourned at 8:12 PM.
